I recently set myself a project of taking photos with my phone. I do have a ‘proper’ camera and just usually use the phone for taking quick snaps of family and friends. But I saw an exhibtion of landscape photos taken solely with a phone and this set me thinking about trying to do a bit more with my phone.
To be honest, I found it a lot more difficult than using my camera. The phone kept slipping through my fingers - but that’s probably just me being clumsy. And sometimes it was difficult to see the screen when it was very sunny. But modern phones have amazing cameras in them and are so convenient to carry around. I walk round Newport Pagnell and the BuryField common most mornings now and always take the phone with me. There’s always something to see.
If you’ve never tried editing your phone pictures before, give it a go. You might be surprised by the results. And it you don’t like what you see, delete it and start again. It’s all about having fun.

Steve is not very arty crafty. He has been known to make cakes (see picture) and scones.
During lockdown he has been recording the MKCCG Dickie Ticker podcast with Alex and they have now recorded their own "independent" podcast, called The Discussionarium, which is available on multiple podcast platforms and has been listened to in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the USA . This has meant Steve learning to use new apps to edit the podcasts and compose the theme tunes, both of which you can listen to here.
The weird one has been replaced by the more upbeat one, which you may recognise if you listen to the Dickie Ticker podcasts.
I took up oil painting at the beginning of lockdown. First oils I’ve done since the 1970’s. No lessons, just had a bash. Done loads now. Mainly do portraits of the grandchildren and birds!
‘Need a Hug’ - painted for my grandchildren. ‘Pair of Red Kites’ – often fly over my house. First big painting I’ve done.
‘Self Portrait’ or ‘If you can’t fight wear a big hat!’ – First self portrait. ‘Supermarine Spitfire' – my very first effort.
Oils are very forgiving and allow for a great variety of styles and techniques. I usual[y listen to rainforest sounds in the background. It’s therapeutic and focusses the mind. For a short time you can lose yourself. It doesn’t matter if you think you’re no good at ‘art’. Materials are relatively inexpensive. If you haven’t painted since school, have a go. Need inspiration? Start with family, nature, architecture, photos, whatever. Use basic shapes, colour them in! Got a picture! Start small and experiment. Loads of brilliant idea on the internet – for the novice and the aspiring Lucien Freud! Have fun.
